Marion-Florence USD 408 is a 3A rural school district covering 237 square miles. The district is situated on the west edge of the Flint Hills. It includes the towns of Marion and Florence, Marion County Lake, and the Marion Reservoir.

In recent years, USD 408 has experienced the decline in student enrollment plaguing most Kansas schools. There are approximately 500 students in grades K-12 currently attending school in USD 408. Butler County Community College offers a wide variety of classes to residents of the district and Marion County.

Marion is located approximately 60 miles northeast of Wichita, and serves as the seat of Marion County. The district has a hospital, two doctors, one dentist, and three chiropractors. Two quality nursing homes serve the Marion and Florence areas.

Educational Facilities and Programs

Marion-Florence USD 408 has approximately 500 students who are educated in three buildings at two sites. Marion Elementary School houses grades K-5, sixth, seventh and eighth grade students attend Marion Middle School and grades 9-12 attend Marion High School. All facilities are located in Marion.

The district offers a comprehensive academic program. Forty-three certified educators are employed in the district. Included are a District School Improvement/Curriculum Coordinator and a District Technology Coordinator.

USD 408 is a member of two interlocal cooperatives and one educational service center. The Marion County Special Education Cooperative (MCSEC) serves the five school districts located in Marion County. In addition, the district is a member of the Technology Excellence in Education Network (TEEN). This is a twoway interactive video network with classroom studios in five school districts in Marion and Dickinson counties. USD 408 is one of 30+ member school districts of the Educational Services and Staff Development Association of Central Kansas (ESSDACK). This organization provides the district with support in the areas of staff development, environmental compliance, insurance and other cooperative ventures.
